If you believe they don’t write songs like they used to, here is new hope
for old romantics. On her new album Chances, Canadian chanteuse Jill
Barber picks up the torch where the golden age of music left off. Taking
a giant step forward from the typical confines of the singer-songwriter,
Jill delivers an album of 10 original, fully orchestrated songs that
strongly evoke the sounds of Edith Piaf, Patsy Cline and Etta James—and
could themselves become classics.

A seasoned performer with a growing fan base across North America,
Australia and the UK, Jill is a double-Juno nominee and multiple East
Coast Music Award winner (2009 Jazz Recording of the Year and Female
Artist of the Year for Chances).

15. Ornette Coleman at the Ottawa Bluesfest
LeBreton Gallery, Canadian War Museum (in among the tanks)
     Saturday, July 11 - 9:00 p.m.
Tickets: $65.00 ($20 premium over regular day pass)

Fifty years after he astonished the musical world with his initial recorded
forays into free jazz, Ornette Coleman remains astounding. His two-bass
band—featuring son Denardo on percussion and Tony Falanga and Greg Cohen on
acoustic bass—works spectacularly well, as displayed on his fervent live album
Sound Grammar. Now in his 70s, Coleman has lost nothing in terms of
instrumental prowess on his customary alto sax and occasional trumpet and
violin. His distinctive writing still stands heads above both his peers and
even the most inventive of Jazz's younger generation. Coleman has been shaking
things up since he first came on the scene, and his recent recordings send the
message that he doesn't intend to stop stirring things up anytime soon.
